When we found home : a novel / Susan Mallery.

Mallery, Susan, (author.).

Summary:

Life is meant to be savoured, but that's not easy with no family, limited prospects and a past you'd rather not talk about. Still, Callie Smith doesn't know how to feel when she discovers she has a brother and a sister - Malcolm, who grew up with affection, wealth and privilege, and Keira, a streetwise twelve-year-old. Callie doesn't love being alone, but at least it's safe. Despite her trepidation, she moves into the grand family home with her siblings and grandfather on the shores of Lake Washington, hoping just maybethis will be the start of a whole new life.

Best-selling romance author Mallery (Sisters like Us, 2018) presents a heartwarming stand-alone novel about a family brought together under unusual circumstances. Alberto, the patriarch of the Carlesso family, is determined to repair the ties that his son cut by abandoning three children in different cities. Alberto has already raised his grandson, Malcolm, and established him at the top of his gourmet-food business, Alberto's Alfresco. Then he tracked down precocious 12-year-old Keira in foster care. Now he's found Callie, a 26-year-old trying to rebuild after a teenage mistake resulted in her serving time in jail and derailing her life. Malcolm is unsure how to be a brother to these vulnerable young women, while, at the same time, he's opening himself up to a relationship with Delaney, a woman who is also dealing with loss and change. Mallery weaves together these stories in a compelling contemporary fairy tale that culminates in a satisfyingly happy ending. Readers will snap up this escapist summer read. Mallery (Sisters like Us) spins a heartwarming but shallow story about people searching for security and love. In present-day Seattle, Delaney Holbrook is trying to move on after losing her fiancé and quitting her job. She turns to Malcolm Carlesso, who's running his family's company and has his own life upheaval in the form of two recently discovered younger sisters, Kiera and Callie. As Malcolm tries to raise Kiera, he's dealing with Callie's past as a convicted felon and her budding romance with his best friend, Santiago Trejo. To top it all off, someone is stealing from his company. Though the characters manage to figure out how to be family, there's so much going on that the issues of the relationships are only surface level. Despite the complexities, this book is sweet and will appeal to readers who enjoy the intricacies of family drama. Agent: Annelise Robey, Jane Rotrosen Agency. (July)
