Comfortably housed in the USA cable channel's niche of stylish, lightweight takes on familiar genres, Fairly Legal serves up a riff on the legal show, with Sarah Shahi starring as Kate Reed, a one-time lawyer who turned her back on the family business to become a mediator. Kate uses a mix of savvy and psychological insight to solve conflicts outside of the courtroom, both for the firm founded by her late father and for court-appointed assignments from the irascible but affectionate Judge David Nicastro (Gerald McRaney). Kate's a whiz at solving everyone's problems but her own: she's in the middle of divorce proceedings from her soon-to-be-ex-husband, Assistant D.A. Justin Patrick (Michael Trucco), and constantly clashes with her stepmother, Lauren (Virginia Williams), a woman her own age who's taken over the company. Kate is full of colorful quirks and flaws (she never arrives anywhere on time), generous with strangers, and self-destructive. Over the course of the brief 10-episode 2011 first season, Kate discovers that her dad was not the legal saint she'd been led to believe. Extras include deleted scenes, scene comparisons with creator commentary, and a gag reel. Emphasizing character and light drama over tactics and moral conflict, Fairly Legal is a strong optional purchase. (S. Axmaker)Copyright Video Librarian Reviews 2011.
