  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2015 October #1
This installment in the Careers in Your Community series explores a topic not often discussed for young readers: how to become a tattoo artist. It takes a look at the process behind tattooing, some of the reasons people get tattoos, and the routes and apprenticeships an artist might take in order to work professionally. The layout leaves much to be desired—this is very text heavy, and many of the photos are awkward or low quality—but the information provided is thorough and to the point. One chapter on licensing and standards and another on opening a store could be particularly valuable to those seriously considering the industry. The text is sure to point out that much of the stigma surrounding tattoos and tattooing has ebbed in recent years, and presents the pros and cons of striking out in this business without bias. Gr 7–10—Concentrating on jobs both familiar and often-overlooked, this content-heavy series is filled with valuable advice and guidelines, as well as words of wisdom from seasoned professionals. Students learn about training, education, and licensure requirements, necessary characteristics (physical, mental, and personality) to do the job well, and career prospects. These titles provide readers with beneficial information to help determine whether the job is right for them. Individuals working in the field share their experience in informative sidebars, while in-text quotes from professionals detail potential challenges and rewards. Useful prep tips and recommendations—such as resources for job hunters, the importance of networking, and creating memorable resumes—remind teens that while hard skills are important, people skills matter just as much. VERDICT Libraries can't go wrong with these welcome additions.
